L’or is a French producer of coffee that specialized in making Nespresso coffee capsules. They are a great alternative to Nespresso’s own espresso pods as L’or is cheaper and is available widely around in the world in grocery stores and online.
Whether or not you can enjoy L’or’s coffee pods will depend on which Nespresso machine you own.
Do L’or Capsules Fit Nespresso Vertuo?
If you own a Nespresso Vertuo, either a Vertuo Next, VertuoPlus or any of the Vertuo Line models: L’or coffee pods are NOT compatible with the Vertuo system, unfortunately.
Nespresso’s Vertuo pods are still locked and exclusive to Nespresso only. No other brand can make pods compatible with Vertuo machines. So, whether it’s L’or, Lavazza or other brand you’re looking to use for your Vertuo machine, it’s not possible.
What Other Pods Work with Nespresso Vertuo?
There are no generic or third party pods available for Nespresso Vertuo. If you own a Vertuo machine, you have to buy your capsules from Nespresso only.
This is due to the patent that Nespresso owns over the Vertuo brewing system and Vertuo capsule design. The exception to this rule is Starbucks, which provides Vertuo capsules, but those are made by Nespresso.
What Nespresso Machine Is Compatible with L’or Pods?
If you want to use L’or coffee capsules, you’ll have to own any machine that is compatible with Nespresso OriginalLine pods. These can be made by Nespresso, or by other brands. L’or do make their own coffee machines, too.
Nespresso Original Line Machines
Nespresso has a wide range of Nespresso OriginalLine machines. These include: Essenza Mini and Plus, Citiz and Pixie, Lattissima by DeLonghi or Creatista by Breville.
With any of these machines, you can use Nespresso’s own capsules or ANY capsule from ANY brand that makes OriginalLine coffee capsules.

L’or Barista or L’or Original
L’or started making their own coffee machines, and they’re truly worth considering.
1- L’OR Barista System (also known as Barista Sublime)
2- L’OR Original, which is the same machine but with a built-in milk frother.
These two coffee machines not only work with L’or coffee pods, but also with Nespresso’s OriginalLine pods and pods from other brands including Lavazza, Illy, Dunkin’s… pretty much any pod compatible with OriginalLine machines.
Type of L’or Coffee Capsules
L’or makes two kind of espresso capsules, in two different sizes. One of them is compatible with all Nespresso OriginalLine machines, and the other is only compatible with their L’or coffee Machines.
L’or Espresso and Lungo Capsules
These pods, which will say ‘compatible with Nespresso OriginalLine machines’, will work with pretty much any Nespresso OriginalLine machine. They are perfect for serving sizes from 1.35 oz to 3.5 oz. They’re available in a range of blends and intensities for every taste.
L’or XXL Coffee Capsules
These new capsules are exclusive to L’or’s Barista Systems, and you should see it written on top of the box. They are designed to brew larger cups of coffee, from 5 oz to 12 oz. And although they seem comparable to the espresso pods, they are actually larger as they contain more coffee grounds – around 10 grams per pod.
These won’t fit in Nespresso machines. They will only fit L’or’s Barista coffee machines.
In Conclusion – L’or Coffee Pods for Vertuo? No Such Thing
If you own a Nespresso Vertuo, you’re limited to Nespresso’s own coffee capsules. That’s the unfortunate truth. And it’s one that made me make the switch from a VertuoPlus to an Essenza Mini.
If you want to enjoy L’or espresso and lungo coffee capsules, you need:
- a Nespresso OriginalLine machine – from Nespresso or any other brand.
- a L’or Barista System
Better yet, if you want to enjoy L’or’s XXL coffee Pods, get yourself a L’or Barista System, which I find to be the best alternative to Nespresso Vertuo. It makes larger coffee cups as well as espresso sizes, without limiting your espresso capsules. Although coffee wise, you’ll be limited L’or’s own XXL pods.
