Change Cup Sizes on Your Nespresso: Step-by-Step Guide

Nespresso Troubleshooting Aug 07, 2023

Whether you are an owner of a Nespresso Vertuo or OriginalLine machine, you know that your machine comes preset with several serving sizes.

But here’s the great news: your Nespresso machine allows you to program cup sizes to your liking in any Nespresso machine.

In this post, you’ll find out how to change the cup sizes on a Nespresso machine of any model.

    Default Cup Sizes

The term ‘Cup Size’ in Nespresso refers to the amount of coffee volume that dispenses for a specific button or pod.

Change Cup Sizes on Your Nespresso: Step-by-Step Guide

In an OriginalLine machine, you use specific buttons ‘Espresso or Lungo’ to brew a cup size.

In a Vertuo machine, there is a set of pods for each cup size you want to brew, and the machine will automatically detect what pod you are brewing and dispense the correct amount.

For example, to brew espresso, you’ll choose a pod from the espresso pod selection. For a coffee, you’ll select a pod from the 7.7 oz coffee pods selection.

All Nespresso machines have the ability to program the cup size according to the user’s preference. This feature allows the user to adjust the default amount of coffee that is dispensed into the cup.

By default, your Nespresso machine will dispense these amounts of coffee volumes:

    Pod TypeVolumeNespresso Machine
    Espresso1.35 ozVertuo and OriginalLine
    Lungo3.75 ozOriginalLine
    Double Espresso2.7 ozVertuo
    Gran Lungo5 ozVertuo
    Coffee7.7 ozVertuo
XL Coffee12 ozVertuo Next, Vertuo Pop Only
Carafe18 ozVertuo Next, Vertuo Pop only

The programming of any of these cup sizes is done manually. After you reprogram the volume, the machine will save it for future uses until you either reprogram it again or reset your Nespresso machine.

    Changing the Cup Sizes

Before you start programming your coffee cup size, there are two things to keep in mind:

    • Changing the cup size adds water to your coffee brew. So you are using the same amount of coffee grounds with more water, which can lead to weaker tasting coffee.
    • Don’t overdo it. Mostly, adding an ounce or so to the cup size won’t weaken the taste of your coffee that much. But stretching your coffee with an additional two or three ounces will definitely water it down.

Below, you’ll find a step-by-step guide for each Nespresso machine type.

Change Cup Size on a Vertuo Machine

How to Reprogram Nespresso Vertuo Cup Size

Nespresso Vertuo is an advanced coffee machine that offers a range of cup sizes to suit different preferences. It has 4 preset cup sizes, and 2 additional cup sizes exclusive to the Vertuo Next and Vertuo Pop models.

However, users can reprogram the machine to customize the cup size according to their liking.

    How To Do It

Works for: Nespresso Vertuo Next, Vertuo Pop, Vertuo, VertuoPlus

To program the Vertuo cup size, follow these simple steps:

    1. Turn on the machine and wait for it to heat up.
    2. Insert the pod you want to resize.
    3. Press and hold the brew button
    4. Release the button when the desired volume of coffee has been dispensed.
    5. Repeat the process for other cup sizes you want to reprogram.

You have now programmed the cup size that correlates to that pod.

For example, if you programmed a 7.7 oz coffee pod to dispense 9 oz, then all other coffee pods will brew at 9 oz, and not just the specific pod flavor you used. It will continue to brew at that cup size until you reprogram it again or reset your machine.

Change Cup Sizes on a Nespresso Original Machine

How To Reprogram Nespresso OriginalLine Cup Size

These are machines such as Essenza Mini, Pixie, Citiz, Inissia, Lattissima… They have two buttons: Espresso (1.35 oz) and Lungo (3.75 oz).

    How To Program It

To program the cup sizes on a Nespresso Original, follow these steps:

    1. Turn on the machine and wait for it to warm up.
    2. Press and hold the button for the cup size you want to program until the desired amount of coffee is in the cup.
    3. Release the button, and the machine will remember the new cup size for that button.

In an Original machine, since it uses a button for each serving size, you can program the buttons with or without the use of pods. The new serving size is saved until you reprogram or reset the machine.

    Troubleshooting

If you’re experiencing issues with your machine’s cup sizes, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can take to resolve the problem.

The easiest way to fix a serving size issue is by programming it again. The second fix is to reset your Nespresso machine to factory settings.

Reset Cup Size by Factory Resetting

If you feel like you’ve played around with your coffee machine a bit too much and now it’s not functioning as you hope, the quickest way to fix it is by resetting your Nespresso machine to factory settings.

Factory resetting a machine means that it will wipe out any customization you have on it. You’ll have a fresh start with your Nespresso machine and you can reprogram everything again.
