Your Nespresso dispenses too little coffee — or maybe too much. Either way, every Nespresso machine lets you reprogram the cup size to match exactly what you want. The process takes less than 60 seconds and you only need to do it once per pod type or button.
This guide covers how to set the cup size on every Nespresso model — Vertuo Next, Vertuo Pop, VertuoPlus, Essenza Mini, Inissia, Pixie, Citiz, and more — plus what to do if it’s not saving correctly.
Default Nespresso Cup Sizes — What Your Machine Ships With
Before changing anything, it helps to know what the factory defaults are. These are the volumes your machine dispenses out of the box:
| Pod / Button Type | Default Volume | Compatible Machine | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Espresso | 1.35 oz (40ml) | Vertuo & OriginalLine | Most concentrated, shortest brew |
| Lungo | 3.75 oz (110ml) | OriginalLine only | Longer pull, slightly milder |
| Double Espresso | 2.7 oz (80ml) | Vertuo only | Two-shot equivalent |
| Gran Lungo | 5 oz (150ml) | Vertuo only | Between lungo and coffee |
| Coffee | 7.7 oz (230ml) | Vertuo only | Standard mug size |
| XL Coffee | 12 oz (355ml) | Vertuo Next & Pop only | Large mug / travel cup |
| Carafe | 18 oz (535ml) | Vertuo Next & Pop only | Multi-cup serving |
Important note on Vertuo machines: The machine automatically detects which pod you insert using a barcode, and each pod type has its own programmed volume. So when you reprogram the cup size for a coffee pod, it applies to all coffee pods — not just the specific flavour you used to set it.

How to Program Cup Size on a Nespresso Vertuo Machine

This works for the Vertuo Next, Vertuo Pop, VertuoPlus, and the original Vertuo. The method is the same across all four — the only difference is which pod sizes are available (the Next and Pop support XL and Carafe sizes; the others don’t).
How to Set Nespresso Cup Size — Vertuo Models
- Turn the machine on and wait for it to heat up (steady green or white light).
- Insert the pod for the cup size you want to adjust.
- Press and hold the brew button — do not release it. The machine will start dispensing coffee.
- Release the button when the coffee reaches your desired volume. The machine will stop immediately and save that volume.
- That’s it — the new size is saved automatically for that pod type.
⚠️ Good to know The new size applies to the pod category, not just the flavor. For example, if you reprogram using a Melozio coffee pod, all 7.7 oz coffee pods will now brew at your new volume — including Intenso, Stormio, etc.
How to Adjust Nespresso Vertuo Cup Size for XL and Carafe (Next and Pop Only)
The Vertuo Next and Vertuo Pop support two additional pod sizes: XL Coffee (12 oz) and Carafe (18 oz). These work exactly the same way — insert the pod, hold the button, release when you hit your target volume.
If you use a Nespresso Vertuo Next with a travel mug, you can stretch the XL pod to fill it completely by holding the button a few seconds longer than the default stop.
How to Program Cup Size on a Nespresso OriginalLine Machine
This covers Essenza Mini, Inissia, Pixie, Citiz, Lattissima One, Gran Lattissima, and other OriginalLine models. These machines have two buttons — Espresso and Lungo — and you program each one independently.
How to Set Nespresso Cup Size — OriginalLine Models

- Turn the machine on and let it heat up fully.
- Insert a pod if you want (optional — the machine can reprogram without one).
- Press and hold the button for the size you want to change (Espresso or Lungo).
- Keep holding while coffee dispenses. Release when you reach your target volume. The machine saves instantly.
- Repeat for the other button if needed.
Programming Espresso vs Lungo Independently
One of the advantages of OriginalLine machines is that you program each button separately. So you can set your Espresso button to 1 oz for a ristretto-style shot, while keeping your Lungo at 4 oz — they won’t affect each other.
What About Lattissima Models?
On Lattissima One and Gran Lattissima, you can reprogram the coffee buttons using the same hold-to-set method. However, the milk frother settings are separate and controlled differently — reprogramming the coffee volume won’t affect how milk is dispensed.
Tips for Getting the Cup Size Right

Will Increasing the Cup Size Make My Coffee Weaker?
Yes — and this is the most important thing to understand before you start adjusting. When you program a larger cup size, you’re not adding more coffee grounds — you’re adding more water through the same amount of grounds. This means:
- Adding 0.5–1 oz: Barely noticeable difference in strength for most people
- Adding 1–2 oz: Slightly lighter body, still enjoyable
- Adding 2+ oz: Coffee will taste noticeably diluted and flat
If you want more volume without sacrificing strength, a better approach is to brew at the default size and add hot water separately — this is essentially what an Americano is.
How to Program a Smaller Cup Size
The same hold-to-release method works for reducing volume too. Just release the button earlier than the default stop point. This gives you a stronger, more concentrated shot — closer to a ristretto style.
Troubleshooting — Cup Size Not Saving or Reverting
My Nespresso Isn’t Saving the New Cup Size
If your machine keeps reverting to the old volume, the most likely cause is not holding the button for long enough. The machine needs you to hold it through the brew — if you tap instead of hold, it brews at the stored volume without reprogramming it.
- Vertuo machines: Make sure you’re pressing and holding before the machine starts. If you press briefly first and then hold, it may not enter programming mode correctly.
- OriginalLine machines: Hold the button continuously from the start — don’t tap and then hold.
How to Reset Nespresso Cup Size to Factory Default
If you’ve changed the cup size and want to go back to the original, the quickest fix is a factory reset. This returns all cup sizes to their default volumes at once.
⚠️ Note A factory reset also wipes any other customization on the machine. After resetting, the machine will brew at the default volumes listed in the table at the top of this guide.
For Vertuo Next / Vertuo Pop: Open the head (no pod inside), close it, leave lever unlocked, then press the button five times within 3 seconds. Light blinks orange 5 times then turns white — reset complete.
For VertuoPlus: Enter Special Function mode (button + lever for 3 seconds), then press lever three times and press button to confirm.
For OriginalLine machines: Hold both the Espresso and Lungo buttons simultaneously for 3–5 seconds until the lights blink three times.

My Machine Won’t Stop Brewing When I Release the Button
On Vertuo machines, releasing the button during programming stops the flow and saves the volume. If the machine continues past where you released, it may have already reached the maximum volume for that pod type and stopped automatically — which is normal. You can’t program beyond the maximum for a given pod category.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I set different cup sizes for each pod on a Vertuo?
Not per flavor — only per pod category. The machine reads the barcode on each pod to identify its type (espresso, double espresso, gran lungo, coffee, XL, carafe), and stores one volume setting per category. All pods of the same type will brew at whatever volume you programmed last.
Does changing the cup size affect caffeine?
No — caffeine content comes from the pod itself, not the volume of water. Adding more water makes the same amount of caffeine more diluted, so the coffee tastes weaker but the caffeine is the same. If you want more caffeine, use a higher-intensity pod rather than a larger cup size.
