Single-Serve Espresso Makers

Lavazza Expert Review and Comparison with Lavazza Blue

Lavazza is a company that needs no introduction. The Italian brand is a leader in the world of coffee beans and has been around for ages, for over 120 years.

If you’re a fan of Lavazza’s coffee, a single-serve coffee maker like the Expert Classy Plus would make a great addition to your kitchen or office. You’ll be able to enjoy Lavazza coffee drinks with a press of a button.

Features of Lavazza Expert ‘Classy Plus’

No products found.

The machine comes preset with 6 selections of beverages: espresso, lungo, 8 oz coffee, macchiato, cappuccino and latte. For black coffee drinks like espresso, lungo or coffee, all you have to do is insert a capsule and press a button. But if you want to make a milk based coffee drink like a cappuccino or a latte, you’ll need to use the included milk frother vessel.

The milk frother that comes with the Lavazza Expert looks different than any other I’ve seen with a single-serve machine. It is actually a large glass cup that the machine will directly heat, froth and dispense the espresso into, and you can drink right out of it when the drink is ready. Of course, you can also transfer the drink to another cup, but that will mess up the aesthetics of your drink.

Pod Compatibility:

Lavazza Expert is compatible with pods from Lavazza that are labelled for Expert or for Blue machine. Beware when purchasing your pods, as Lavazza also makes pods for Nespresso and Keurig K-Cups, and none of these will be compatible with the Expert line.

So far, Lavazza has four blends available Expert and each of these blends/intensities are available as espresso or coffee pods. If you choose to use pods from Lavazza Blue, you’ll find additional blends to try, but they are only available as espresso pods.

Lavazza pods are available for purchase from many online retailers, including Amazon or Lavazza’s online store.

What I Like About the Lavazza Expert:

  • All in one solution.
  • The unique milk frother/glass combination means that you’ll only froth the amount of milk you need (no leftovers like most built-in frothers), and you drink right out of the cup, meaning less parts to clean.

What I Don’t Like About the Lavazza Expert:

  • The milk frother/cup combination (yes, I know I just mentioned that I like it). What I don’t like though, is that it is designed for a single person use only. What happens if I want to make two or three cappuccinos? Do I transfer each drink it makes to another cup or do I buy additional vessels/frothers (they are available for purchase separately).
  • The pods are limited at this point. But there are enough to make delicious coffee drinks at different intensities.

Lavazza Expert vs. Blue (Classy Plus vs. Classy Mini)

No products found.

As its name suggest, Blue Classy Mini is the smaller version of the Classy Plus. The Blue model has two drink options only, Espresso or Lungo. And it does not include a milk frother.

The Blue model has a small 23 oz water reservoir while the Expert has 42 oz reservoir.

So what if you want to make a milk-based drink using the Lavazza Blue? You’ll have to buy a milk frother separately. The Lavazza frothing jug/vessel that comes with the Expert is NOT compatible with the Blue model, so you’ll have to go for an electric milk frother of any kind, many brands are available to pick from.

How Do You Choose Between Lavazza Expert or Blue?

It’s a simple pick between the Expert and Blue:

Do you enjoy milk based drinks? How often do you drink them? If your answer is yes, then it only makes sense to go for the Expert model.

If you drink espressos/lugno mostly, but enjoy a cappuccino or latte every once in a while, or maybe you have a friend/visitor that might enjoy one, you can buy the Blue model and include any milk frother to your purchase. This is also a great option if you find the Expert to be out of your budget. The Blue model is an inexpensive choice in comparison, and you can find any milk frother that fits your budget.

Which Is Better, Nespresso or Lavazza?

Nespresso OriginalLine is probably the most comparable to Lavazza’s Expert or Blue machines.

Nespresso has been in the single-serve coffee making business longer than Lavazza. They have a bigger range of products and options to choose from.

Functions wise, both can make the same coffee drinks. Although I find that Nespresso’s Aeroccino milk frother to be more convenient to use than Lavazza’s, especially when entertaining guests and wanting to make multiple drinks at the same time.

When it comes to pod compatibility, Nespresso OriginalLine is now compatible with a wider range of capsules, either from Nespresso or 3rd party brands (including Lavazza).

If you’re an avid fan of Lavazza, then you’ll enjoy their machines, no doubt about it. But if you’re looking for convenience, and wider range of capsules to try, then go for a Nespresso OriginalLine machine. Even if you love your Lavazza espresso, you’ll be able to buy Lavazza pods for Nespresso, as well as other brands like Illy, Starbucks, and many more.

Does Lavazza Make Hot Chocolate Pods?

Lavazza has hot chocolate as well as tea pods that are for BLUE machines, but are also compatible with Expert. However, after doing some research, I found that these were really hard to find for purchase. You might find some European vendors selling these, but you’ll have to keep in mind that overseas shipping can cost you a lot (If you live in Europe, then problem here). If you want hot chocolate pods that are readily available in the US (or locally in other countries), then again I will recommend going for a Nespresso OriginalLine machine, you’ll find hot chocolate pods from compatible brands like Bestpresso, Gourmesso or Podista.

Best Nespresso Vertuo Machine – Which One To Buy?

Since you are looking for the best Nespresso Vertuo machine, then you’ve probably settled on buying a Vertuo instead of an OriginalLine machine. Great decision! Now, on to the next…. which Vertuo machine should you buy?

Before getting to Vertuo’s models and which one to go for, let’s remind you of a few things just to make sure you’ve made the right decision.

Nespresso Vertuo vs. OriginalLine, What’s The Difference?

Nespresso has two range of machines:

OriginalLine – Their original machines which brew espresso and can be used to make any espresso based drink.

Vertuo line – which can make 5 to 6 different cup sizes from espresso, coffee mug to a large travel mug size. It’s an espresso and coffee machine.

These two ranges of machines also use different brewing technologies:

OriginalLine work like most espresso machines, using a pressure pump to force water through the capsule to produce a shot of espresso.

Vertuo machines use a whole new technology, exclusive to Nespresso, called Centrifusion. This technology rapidly spins the coffee capsule, at 7000 rotations per minute, while forcing the water through the capsule to produce a cup of coffee or espresso. This allows for better distribution of water and full saturation of the coffee ground in the capsule.

The third big difference between OriginalLine and Vertuo machines is the capsules. They are completely different in size and design and cannot be used on interchangeably.

Since OriginalLine only produces espresso, the machines use smaller capsules. The capsules are available from Nespresso as well as other brands.

Vertuoline’s capsules vary in size, depending on the coffee size you’re brewing. They also have a unique design. The rims of each capsule feature a barcode that is read by a laser inside the machine to recognize the type of capsule and adjust brewing parameters (water volume, brew time, temperature) to match it.

Vertuoline capsules are only available from Nespresso. There are no capsules available from other brands

Should You Buy a Vertuo or an OriginalLine Machine?

Here are the two questions you need to ask yourself:

What coffee drinks do you enjoy the most? If you’re mostly making espresso based drinks such as cappuccino, lattes and so on… an OriginalLine would be more than enough. Bundle it with a milk frother and you’re all set for an at-home coffee house experience!

When do you pick Vertuo over the OriginalLine? If you want to brew larger cups of coffee (5 oz, 7.7 oz and 14 oz).Vertuo will give you every possible coffee drink, from espresso and up to a large coffee.

What Does Vertuo Coffee Taste Like?

If you’re switching from drip coffee machine or a Keurig machine, it’s important to note that Vertuo’s coffee (as in serving sizes 5 oz, 7 oz and 14 oz) will not taste like those. Drip coffee and Keurig coffee are brewed using a different process so it produces different taste. Vertuo’s coffee tastes closer to an Americano if you’ve ever tried one. And with Nespresso’s different varieties of coffee blends, you’ll experience coffee of different intensities and flavors.

Vertuo Next is also a connected machine. It can pair to your smartphone or tablet to allow for several things: firmware updates from Nespresso, water reservoir alerts, descale alerts, factory reset.

Unlike the VertuoPlus, Vertuo Next’s lid is manually opened/closed. So you have to hard close the lid in order for it to pierce the capsule, rotate the lock then hit the brew button.

Vertuo Next is available in several models:

Vertuo Next which is fully plastic housing, Vertuo Next Premium with some chrome or rose gold accent or the deluxe model which has some dark chrome or chrome finishes.

Nespresso GCC1-US-GM-NE VertuoLine Evoluo Deluxe Coffee and Espresso Maker, Graphite Metal (Discontinued Model)

There are two other machines that go by the name Vertuo or Evoluo. These are earlier releases of Vertuo machines. While they still work okay, many customers mentioned that they has unstable temperature or lower than desired brew temperature. All has been fixed in the newer Vertuo machines (VertuoPlus and Vertuo Next). Which is why I don’t recommend you buy an older model.

Pros and Cons of Nespresso Vertuo Machines:

Serving Sizes:

It’s great that you can finally get a full cup of coffee out of your Nespresso machine. The variety of serving sizes is great for most people’s daily coffee needs.

Nespresso is very convenient. It’s a quick, one-button operation that gives you a high quality cup of coffee in no time. And the best part it, it does not require regular clean up after each use.

Pod compatibility is still limited to Nespresso. To me personally, it’s not a problem as I really like the variety of blends that Nespresso offers. But I know some people would prefer to buy from other brands, too.

Somewhat pricey: The pods vary is price depending on the size, and sometimes on whether it’s a seasonal blend or a regular one. Price range for Vertuo pods are $0.85 to $2 per pod.

Nespresso Vertuo Breville vs DeLonghi

When shopping for a Vertuo or OriginalLine machine from Nespresso, some machines will be labeled under the brand name Breville, others will be under DeLonghi. Is there a difference between them?

No, they are all the same internally. Operation and performance wise, they are the same. The differences could be aesthetic, as some brands might have colors that the other brand doesn’t have or slight changes in exterior design.

It doesn’t matter which name you go for, they are all the same Nespresso machines.

Vertuo machines are compatible with capsules by Nespresso only. There are no 3rd party pods available. So if you’re buying a Vertuo machine, you’re committing to capsules by Nespresso only.

Nespresso offers a wide range of capsules and are continuously adding more blends, single-origins and limited edition blends and flavors.

Vertuo capsules vary in size as their contain different measurement of coffee ground, depending on the cup size you’re brewing. They also vary in prices depending on the size.

You can buy your Vertuo capsules directly from Nespresso or Amazon.

Can You Use Nespresso Original Pods in a Vertuo Machine?

No, they are completely different designs and non will fit in the other system.

To tell them apart, you can see from the photo that the OriginalLine pods are small. Vertuo pods are circular and have a barcode all around the rim which helps your Vertuo machine identify the type and size of pod you are brewing.

Can You Use Your Own Coffee in Nespresso Vertuo? Using Refillable Vertuo Pods:

Using a refillable capsule for your Nespresso could bring down your coffee expenses and allows you to use your favorite coffee ground.

Refillable pods have been available for OriginalLine machines for a long time now. For Vertuo, there’s been some recent and very few refillable pods.

Before we look into available refillable pods for Vertuo machines, there are a few things I’d to say on why I truly DON’T like refillable pods:

To start, they take away from your Nespresso experience. The whole idea is for you to get the coffee you like with a push of a button. Using a refillable pod, you have to fill up a pod, measure coffee grounds and clean the pod after each use.

The coffee does not always come out right. According to customer reviews, some cups come out quite weak, others are okay.

Reusable capsules could affect the performance of your machine. And if your machine breaks because of a reusable pod, it will no longer be covered under warranty.

That said, if you’re still curious about refillable pods for Vertuo, here are some of the available pods:

Table could not be displayed.

Can You Use a Nespresso Vertuo Pod Twice?

Technically, the machine will not know if you’re running the same pod twice, so, it can be done. But the only thing you’ll be getting out of it the second time is watered down coffee.

Mr. Coffee One-Touch CoffeeHouse vs. Cafe Barista: What’s The Difference Between Them?

Mr. Coffee Cafe Barista has been a favorite among many people who want an automatic machine that’s budget-friendly, user friendly and allows you to tweak your recipes, too. Mr Coffee has released an improved version of the popular machine, the One-Touch CoffeeHouse espresso and Cappuccino maker. In this post, I will highlight the features of the new coffee maker, how it compared to the older version and if it’s worth a buy.

Features of the Mr Coffee One-Touch CoffeeHouse Espresso and Cappuccino Maker:

  • 19-bar Italian pump.
  • One-touch controls delivers the perfect cup of coffee with a single push of a button.
  • No pods required. Use your favorite coffee ground to craft your delicious coffee drinks.
  • Use pre-set buttons or select manual settings to create your drink to your liking.
  • Brew a single or double shots of espresso at a time.
  • Select from two Cappuccino options, two Latte options, two programmable options, a manual/espresso option and froth.
  • Integrated removable milk reservoir automatically heats, froths and adds the milk to your cup. With adjustable froth settings.

How Is Mr Coffee CoffeeHouse Different Than Mr Coffee Cafe Barista?

This is the Mr Coffee Cafe Barista. As you can see, at first glance, there’s little to no difference in the way the look. But there’s certainly some upgrades and differences between the two models:

  • The One-Touch CoffeeHouse is designed to be taller, which means: it can accommodate taller cups, up to 10″ tall if you remove the cup tray.
  • The One-Touch CoffeeHouse has more options. You get two pre-sets for each drink (cappuccino, latte or espresso), you also get additional manual options to customize each drink.
  • On both models, the milk frother is integrated, removable and has the option to adjust the froth level. Capacity wise, it is 650ml in the CoffeeHouse model and 450ml in the Cafe Barista model.
  • The CoffeeHouse model can make a single or double shot at a time. It can also hold two cups at the same time. With the Cafe Barista, you can do one or two shots at the same time, but you can’t fit two cups on the tray.

Some technical differences:

  • The CoffeeHouse now has three thermos  couples compared to two in the Cafe Barista. This means better temperature control and more consistent espresso extraction results.
  • The pump on the CoffeeHouse model is 19-bars vs. 15 bars in the Cafe Barista model. But to be fair, this will hardly make a real difference to you as a user.

Should You Upgrade From Mr. Coffee Cafe Barista To The Newer Model?

Although the One-Touch CoffeeHouse model does have some advantages to the Cafe Barista, like a larger milk tank, more pre-sets, better space for cup accommodation, it’s not necessarily a reason to upgrade unless these are features you really need. Either machine will give you a great cup of coffee. But if, for example, you need to make more cups faster, you’ll find that the fact that you can fit two cups in the drip tray instead of just one a very useful feature. The larger milk tank also means less refilling as it’s large enough to make 6 cappuccinos or 3 lattes.

K-Cafe vs. K-Latte, What’s The Difference Between These Keurig Machines?

For the first time ever, Keurig has released two new machines that specialize in Cappuccino, Latte and specialty coffee drinks, that’s in addition to coffee. K-Cafe and K-Latte are as convenient as other Keurig machines, one button operation gets you a nice cup of Cappuccino, Latte or any other coffee creation you want. And for the first time, these Keurig machines have built-in milk frothers, which means, fresh creamy milk froth at a touch of a button!

In this post, I’ll be talking about the features of K-Cafe and K-Latte, what they do and what’s the difference between them.

Features of Keurig K-Cafe Coffee, Cappuccino and Latte Maker:

What K-Cup Pods Are Compatible with K-Cafe and K-Latte?

Whether you’re brewing a cup of coffee or preparing a shot for a specialty coffee drink, you can use any type of K-Cup pod you want. That includes branded or non-branded K-Cups and refillable filters. When making a shot for specialty coffee, you’re free to use any type of coffee pod you want and not necessarily an espresso K-Cup. This gives you a lot of options to choose from, which is one of the great things about these Keurig machines.

Do K-Cafe and K-Latte Make Espresso Shots?

No, they’re not designed to make authentic espresso shots as that would requires a much powerful pump in the machine. So, how do they make ‘shots’ for your cappuccino and latte? What K-Cafe and K-Latte do is brew a really strong concentrate of coffee that resembles a shot of espresso. Instead of brewing an 8 or 10 oz of coffee out of the K-Cup pod, it will brew a 2 oz coffee concentrate that you use as the base of the cappuccino or latte. Then, you’ll add the froth to it to complete your drink.

Can I Use Any Type of Milk With the Keurig Frother?

Yes, you can use any type of milk you like. That includes soy, almond, rice or coconut milk. But do keep in mind that different milks give different froth results.

What Is The Difference Between K-Cafe and K-Latte?

Now you’ve looked at the features of each model, it’s time to differentiate between them so you can decide which one is the best choice for you. Ultimately, both do the same things, same drinks, using the same pods. Yet, there are some differences that you want to consider for your final decision.

The Frother:

  • The frother on the K-Cafe is made of stainless steel. It’s dishwasher safe and has multiple options: cappuccino froth, latte froth and cold froth.
  • On the K-Latte, the frother is built from different material. It has a plastic exterior and non-stick interior. This makes it not dishwasher safe. Also, there’s no options for froth density. It only heats and froths milk, so you can’t choose between capp, latte or cold froth. K-Latte frother is made for making latte froth.

Coffee Serving Sizes:

  • K-Cafe has four sizes: 6, 8, 10 and 12 oz.
  • K-Latte has only three: 6, 8 and 10 oz.

Strong Brew Option:

  • This option is available in the K-Cafe model only.

Water Reservoir capacity:

  • K-Cafe: 60 oz.
  • K-Latte: 36 oz.

Overall, the K-Cafe model is larger machine. Since it can brew larger serving size, it is equipped with a larger reservoir. The milk frother has more options and if you want to get a bolder flavor, the Strong Brew option is a great features of the K-Cafe. K-Latte, as it’s name indicates, is best for latte lovers. The frother is programmed to make a less dense froth and it only makes hot froth.

Keurig Rivo vs. K-Cafe vs. K-Latte, What’s The Difference?

Before there was Keurig K-Cafe or K-Latte to make specialty drinks, there was Keurig Rivo. Like K-Cafe and K-Latte, it has a built-in frother and it makes cappuccinos, lattes and other coffee drinks. So how come I said it’s Keurig’s first time making machines for specialty coffee drinks? Well, because there’s a huge difference in how Rivo, K-Cafe and K-Latte work, and they’re entirely different systems.

Keurig Rivo, while it has the Keurig name, it does NOT brew K-Cup pods and it does NOT make coffee. It only makes Espresso using pods made from Lavazza, the Italian coffee brand. In this model, espresso made the authentic way, with high pressure pump. That’s why the machine is not able to make regular coffee.

On the other hand, K-Cafe and K-Latte using K-Cup pods, which are widely available, available from more brands and they give you the option to make regular coffee as well as cappuccino and latte.

You can read more about Keurig’s Rivo coffee maker here.

Common Questions About Keurig K-Cafe, K-Latte:

Can I make Hot Chocolate or Tea with K-Cafe or K-Latte?

Yes indeed! You can still brew any kind of K-Cup pod using these machines. Hot Chocolate will be even better with frothy milk!

Can I add other ingredients to the milk frother?

No, it’s not recommended that you add any ingredients (syrup, chocolate powder, chocolate shavings) to the frother. You can only heat/froth milk in it.

Do I have to use an Espresso roast K-Cup pod when making Cappuccino or Latte?

No, that’s not necessary. You can use any type of K-Cup coffee pod. However, an espresso pod would give you better results since it’s usually dark roasted and gives stronger tasting coffee.

Can K-Latte make Cappuccinos too?

To make a Cappuccino, you’ll want more and higher density froth, which the frother on the K-Latte can’t make.

Review of Francis Francis Illy X9 and Comparison with Y3

If there’s one thing Francis Francis for Illy are good at, it’s their ability to create really stylish and compact espresso machines without compromising features. The Illy X9 is an example of this. It’s a truly beautiful piece of design, small and can be placed anywhere without worrying about it taking up much space.

Features of Illy X9:

  • Compact design.
  • Dimensions: 4.80 W x 10.60 D x 10.50 H
  • For use with iperEspresso capsules only.
  • 2 reprogrammable coffee settings.
  • 23 oz water reservoir.

What Is The Difference Between Illy X9 vs. Y3?

[apc id=”61″]

There’s not much difference between the Illy X9 and Y3 in features, in fact, they are exactly the same. The difference however is in the design:

  • Even though both models are compact in size, the shape of the machines dictates how they sit on your countertop. The X9 has a curved design that makes it narrow from the front and back, with its water reservoir sitting at the bottom.
  • On the other hand, the Y3 has a larger 30 oz water reservoir that is fully removable. The X9 has a 23 oz water reservoir that is partially removable.
  • The finish of the X9 is what makes it special. It is housed in Chrome finished Aluminum. The Y3 has some nice chrome accent and tempered glass, but it’s mainly housed in a plastic body.

So choosing between these two models will be purely on design features and what material you prefer your  machine to be.
