The Difference Between Brewing Coffee and Espresso:

A lot of super automatic machines only brew espresso, which is a shot that is made by extracting a strong brew using high force of water. To extract a shot of espresso, machines use a 15-bar (sometimes 19-bar) pump pressure. That’s why espresso machines operate on a totally different level than a drip coffee maker.

Espresso is either drank on its own, or with the use of frothed milk, can be used as a base for many specialty coffee drinks like Cappuccinos, Lattes or Macchiatos.

What about those times when you don’t want espresso, but would prefer a classic cup of coffee instead?

A machine like the Philips Carina can make that for you, too. Although the machine does not drip coffee the same as a classic coffee maker, it uses low pressure to replicate it and produces a long cup of coffee that’s just as good as a traditional drip machine’s.

Hot Water Option – What’s It For?

The hot water button provides you with boiling hot water instantaneously. You don’t have to heat water manually or use an electric kettle to bring water to boil, with the Philips Carina, it’s as simple as pushing a button to get hot water to use for tea, instant meals or whatever else you might need it for! The hot water goes through an independent spout, so you don’t have to worry about any coffee taste or residue in your hot water.

If you’ve seen the Philips 2200, it looks identical to the Carina. And we’re not wrong, they both have the exact same features:

Beverage options: espresso, coffee and hot water.

Temperature settings: 3

Grind settings: 12

Milk Frother: classic steam wand

They also have the same ceramic grinder and water reservoir. So, where’s the difference?

There’s just one single difference between these models: Aroma strength.

The 2200-series has a selection of 3 Aroma Strength settings, which is basically brew strength. Adjusting this setting will allow you to create regular or bold coffee depending on your choice.

Philips 1200, 2200 vs. 3200 Series, What’ the Difference?

If you want to go next level with the features, the 3200-series has the most features out of this line of machines.

The Philips 3200 has:

  • Four preset beverages: espresso, espresso lungo, coffee and americano. It has the hot water option, too.
  • It has adjustable temperature, coffee volume and aroma strength settings.
  • Unlike the 1200 and 2200 series, the 3200 series has its temperature setting on the front panel so you can change it with a press of a button. The other models have the temperature settings inside of the machine that requires a bit of a tinkering.
  • Design wise, the 3200 has some nice stainless steel accents like the bezel around the front panel and the stainless steel drip tray.

Philips 3200 Series vs. 3200 LatteGo Fully Automatic, What’s The Difference?

  • Enjoy 5 coffees
  • Intuitive touch display
  • 12-step grinder adjustment
  • 20,000 cups of finest coffee with durable ceramic grinders

The LatteGo is an upgraded version of the 3200-series machine offering you even more features:

  • It has 5 preset beverages: espresso, coffee, americano, cappuccino and latte macchiato. As well as hot water on demand.
  • The LatteGo has an integrated milk frothing jug. This type of milk frother heats, froths and pours in the milk into your cup automatically. So you don’t have to froth the milk manually using this model.
  • Since the machine has an integrated milk frother, you can adjust the milk and froth volume as well as coffee volume.
  • Unfortunately, this model lacks adjustable temperature settings. But instead, it uses Aroma Extract System, which is an intelligent system that works on balancing temperature and aroma to water flow settings to create the perfect cup.
  • Adjustable settings are temperature, aroma, coffee and milk volume.

Which of These Should You Buy?

If you’re looking for an all in one, push button solution then the 3200 LatteGo has it all. The automatic milk frother means you only need to push the cappuccino or latte button to get your favorite beverage done for you fully automatically. The milk froth will be perfectly done every time. This is the biggest advantage the LatteGo offers you.

If you don’t mind frothing your milk manually, then your choice is between the 1200, 2200 and 3200. The 3200-series offers extra presets (lungo or americano), but I do believe you can save a bit of cash and manually create those presets on either the 1200 or 2200 models. Both models have instant hot water (so you can easily make an americano) and the espresso volume can be adjusted to create a lungo.

If Aroma Strength (brew strength) is important to you, then you can go for either 2200 or 3200.

If you want the most affordable option that still does most tasks, the 1200 is your choice.

Best Holders and Storage Units for Nespresso VertuoLine Pods

We have covered the best holders for Nespresso capsules before, but as you should know by now, Nespresso’s machine VertuoLine has its own new capsules which have a different shape than the Original Nespresso capsules. So, if you happened to be an owner of a VertuoLine machine, you’ll need a holder made specifically for its capsules.

Best Nespresso VertuoLine Capsule/Pod Holders:

NIFTY 6145 Nespresso Vertuoline Capsule Drawer

NIFTY Nespresso VertuoLine Capsule Drawer: Sliding drawer design which allows you to organize up to 40 capsules. The top of the drawer can be used to keep the machine and save a lot of counter space.

Prepara Vertuoso Capsule Holder

Prepara Vertuoso Capsule Holder: If you prefer a vertical holder, the Prepara is a great choice. Made of stainless steel, with some plastic parts, this holder keeps up to 20 pods. The fact that it holds less capsules and is higher in price, we do recommend the NIFTY holder above over it.

Swissmar CAPstore Chrome Finish Vertuo

Swissmar CAPstore VertuoLine Capsule Holder: this is another option for a rotating vertical holder. Although it is a beautiful design that hardly takes any place, on the downside, it only holds 20 capsules.

Is There a Difference Between Espresso Pods and Espresso Capsules?

Most people seem to get confused between Espresso Pods and Espresso Capsules, or actually don’t realize there’s quite a difference between them. They’re two different ways to make a shot of espresso with a pre-measured amount of coffee. So what’s the difference? Read on…

Espresso Pods (Also known as ESE Pods or Easy Serving Espresso):

Espresso Pods

ESE Pods look like pictured above, they’re a round pod that you place inside a special filter in your espresso machine’s portafilter to have your machine brew a perfectly measured shot of espresso.

Almost all espresso machines that use a portafilter have the option to brew coffee using either ground coffee or use an ESE pod. The pods are available from many major coffee brands like Illy, Lavazza and many other European brands.

An example of a machine that uses ESE Pods: Breville Cafe Roma ESP8XL.

Espresso Capsules:

Espresso Capsules

Espresso capsules are another way to create a single shot of perfectly measured espresso, however, an espresso capsule requires a single-serve espresso machine that is compatible with the capsule.

Each single-serve espresso machine has its own line of espresso capsules that is only compatible with it. For example, a Nespresso capsule would only work on a Nesprsso machine.

Your Favorite Cup of Coffee Could Save Your Life!

Cup of Coffee Here’s some piece of fantastic news for coffee lovers! Turns out, coffee could be the reason that keeps you a way from something as dangerous as suicide!

“Aside from a jolt of energy, caffeinated coffee may lower the suicide risk in men and women by 50 percent, Harvard researchers indicated in a recent study.

Reviewing data from three large-scale U.S. studies, the team from the Harvard School of Public Health compared the risk of suicide for adults who consumed two to four caffeinated cups per day with that of non-coffee drinkers, those who drank much less coffee per day and people who chose decaf….

The results, published earlier this month in the The World Journal of Biological Psychiatry, were striking. Comparatively, the suicide risk for those who drank two to four cups per day was about 50 percent less than the risk for subjects in the other groups. (The total sample included more than 200,000 participants, who were studied for time spans of at least 16 years.)”

While that might sound surprising to some, Caffeine has always been known to lower the risk of depression. So, that’s just more good news for us!

How Do Super-Automatic Espresso Machines Work?

DeLonghi ESAM6700 Gran Dama Avant Touch-Screen Super-Automatic Espresso Machine

The name Super-Automatic espresso machine is given to an espresso machine that does it all, from bean grinding to espresso brewing and milk frothing. Here’s how a typical super-auto machine works:

– You press the button for your required espresso volume or drink (single, double, coffee, cappuccino… etc.)

– The machine will automatically estimate the amount of coffee beans required for the drink and it will start grinding it.

– After that, the freshly ground coffee will automatically be pressurized and extracted as espresso, directly into your cup.

– Depending on your machine, if you requested a cappuccino or any milk based drink, it will automatically froth and pour in the milk into the cup as well. It will pour in only as much as your requested drink requires. Other super-auto machines have a frothing wand that will require you to manually froth the milk manually, but you’ll be able to do so while the machine brews the coffee.

And that’s pretty much it!

While Super automatic espresso machines can be a bit costly, they save you a huge amount of cash over time. They last long years, they will save you thousands if you’re someone who likes to buy their coffee at coffee shops every day. Surprisingly, some espresso machines can be quite affordable for what they do, check out our lists of automatic espresso machines under $500 for example. And if you’re willing to splurge (or invest as we like to call it), see our list of super-automatic machines for under $1000.
