You fill up the milk frother jug with milk. But the Milk button does not activate or light up.

This is a truly annoying problem, especially when all you want is to make and enjoy your favorite cup of coffee.

Below, I will explain why this problem happens with Nespresso Lattissima One and a simple workaround to fix it.

Why Your Nespresso Lattissima One Milk Button Is Not Lighting Up

The Nespresso Lattissima One milk button not working is because of a problem with the milk frother sensor not detecting there’s milk in the jug.

Let me explain…

When you fill-up the milk jug of your Nespresso Lattissima One and the Milk button does not light up, it means that the machine does not recognize that you have filled it up with milk.

Behind the milk frother jug on the Lattissima One there’s a black plastic part integrated into the machine. That is a sensor that is supposed to sense you have filled the milk frother jug with the minimum level of milk for it to start the frothing process.

What should happen is, as soon as you fill the jug up with milk, the machine senses there’s enough milk to froth and the Milk button should light up immediately.

Instead, you are facing the issue of the frother not detecting there’s milk in the jug.

Why The Lattissima Milk Frother Is Not Detecting the Milk in Jug

The Nespresso Lattissima One milk frother is temperamental and finicky when it comes to some types of milk.

This problem is more likely to happen when you use low or skimmed-fat milk, or any type of low-fat content milk (dairy or alternative).

Because less fat content means that the milk will be lighter, and slightly see-through, the sensor sees through it as if there’s no milk in the jug.

This is a design issue of Nespresso Lattissima One as you should be able to use any type of milk you like without problems.

How To Fix Nespresso Lattissima One Milk Button

Please not that this is specifically for the issue of the milk button not working or lighting up, which means that the machine is not detecting the milk in jug.

If your Lattissma One is new and still under warranty, I highly recommend that you contact Nespresso and ask for a replacement. Better yet, ask to swap it for a new model so you don’t end up with a machine that has the same problem.

But if you can’t get a new machine. Here’s what you can do:

Use a dark duct tape or piece of paper to cover the sensor. This will trick it into believing that the milk jug is full. It will also cause the milk button to be on all the time, which shouldn’t be a problem.

Once you have covered the sensor, the machine will register the darkness on the sensor as milk in the jug and the milk button should light up immediately.
