Breville Barista Express Vs Gaggia Classic

We’ve talk a lot about the Breville Barista Express before. It is certainly one of our favorite espresso machines with built-in grinder and one of the best espresso machines by Breville.

The Breville Barista Express is often compared to the Gaggia 14101 Classic, a great Italian semi-automatic espresso machine. While both machines produce exceptional shots of espresso, they’re quite different in how they work.

Comparison Between The Breville Barista Express and Gaggia Classic:

The Short Version:

  • Both machines are commercial grade but for the home consumer.
  • However, the Breville Barista Express is more complete with an integrated conical burr grinder, programmable and manual features.
  • The Gaggia Classic operates manually and does NOT include a built-in grinder.

Now for the long version…

First up, the Breville Barista Express:

Breville The Barista Express Coffee Machine

This semi-automatic espresso machine is definitely striking piece of machinery that you’d love to have at home! The main feature that sets it apart from the Gaggia Classic is that is has a built-in conical burr grinder and a bean hopper, which gives you a fresh grind right before you brew your coffee.

Its full feature list includes:

  • 15 bar pump pressure.
  • Thermo coil heating system.
  • Built in conical burr grinder with 1/2 lbs bean hopper.
  • Manual and programmable coffee settings.
  • Ability to adjust coffee grind strength as you desire.
  • Built-in tamper and portafilter cradle.
  • Hot water dispenser.
  • Steam pressure gauge.
  • 67 oz (2 Liters) removable water tank.
  • Swivel steam wand for easy milk frothing.
  • Clean light indicator lights up when machine requires a clean up. Cleaning kit is included.

With the Barista Express, you are quite guaranteed the best shot of espresso you’ll ever make at home. It has a feature called the Auto Purge function, which ensures automatic adjustment of water temperature for the optimal espresso extraction temperature. The result is a shot of espresso with a thick crema layer and a strong aroma that will take you to another world!

Gaggia 14101 Classic Espresso Machine:

Gaggia 14101 Classic Espresso Machine

First thing you’ll notice about this Gaggia machine is its classic looks. It’s compact in size, made of brushed stainless steel housing so you know it’s quite durable. It’s fairly simple to operate, you’ve got two switch buttons for steam and shot control and a knob for frothing.

The full features include:

  • 17 bar pump pressure.
  • 72 ounce water tank.
  • Brass portafilter and grouphead allows for a stable temperature.
  • Frothing wand also doubles as a hot water dispenser.
  • Measures 14-1/4 by 8 by 9-1/2 inches

As we’ve already noted, the Gaggia Classic does not have a built-in grinder, so you’ll want to make sure you have one (see our top rated conical burr grinders here). Although the machine is small in size and has a classic look, it uses advance commercial grade technology to extract a great shot of espresso. It has a higher pressure than the Barista Express, with a high voltage boiler that heats up quickly.

A Closer Look At The Difference Between The Breville Barista Express and Gaggia Classic:

  • Built-In Conical Burr Grinder: Available in the Barista Express.
  • Pump Pressure: 15 bar for the Barista Express vs. 17 1/2 bar for the Gaggia Classic.
  • Water Tank Size: 62 ounce for the Barista Express vs. 72 ounce for the Gaggia Classic.
  • Manual/Programmable features: The Barista Express can be programmed, reprogrammed or used manually. Gaggia Classic can be used manually only.
  • Portafilter: Both machines include different size filters for sinlge, double shot or e.s.e pods.
  • Hot Water Dispenser: Both machines have this feature. The Barista Express has a separate dispenser while the Gaggia Classic’s frother doubles as a dispenser.

Which Should I Buy? The Breville Barista Express or The Gaggia Classic?

That would solely be up to what you’re looking for in an espresso machine for your home.

  • The Breville Barista Express gives you an all-in-one at home cafe experience. You won’t need to buy additional accessories to get the best coffee, it already has everything it needs to product consistent coffee every time.
  • The Gaggia Classic is quite a solid machine, too. It is cheaper in price in comparison with the Barista Express, but you’ll still need a decent coffee grinder next to it, which would total up to the same price. It’s also good to keep in mind that this Gaggia Classic won’t save your preferences, so it’ll require a bit more of work on your part.

Breville The Infuser vs. Gaggia Classic, What’s The Difference?

Breville The Infuser Espresso Machine

Looking at the difference between the Breville Barista Express and The Infuser should give you an idea of how they’re both different than the Gaggia Classic. The Infuser has the same qualities of the Barista Express, only it lacks the built-in grinder and it slightly smaller in size (Which means smaller water tank). But how does it compare to Gaggia’s Classic? Well, like the Classic, it will require that you invest in a separate conical burr grinder, bringing your overall budget up a bit. Otherwise, the Infuser can offer you automatic as well as manual espresso extraction, and it can remember your settings (even when you don’t!), that’s something you won’t have with the Gaggia Classic.

We’ve already covered many of your Nespresso questions, compared the popular Nespresso machines, and covered the difference between models in the Nespresso U range and Nespresso CitiZ. But there’s another capsules system on the market that is worth comparing to Nespresso, and that is illy’s iperEspresso capsule system. In this post, we’ll look at the differences between these two systems, and hopefully this will help you decide which system to go for.

What Is iperEspresso?

iperEspresso is illy’s exclusive coffee capsules. illycafe is an Italian brand that has been around since 1933. The name is associated with the finest European cafes in the world, and if you’ve ever tried their coffee, you’ll know why it is one of the top coffee brands around the world. To bring this luxury and fine taste to you at home, illy created iperEspresso capsules, pre-measured capsules that will make you the perfect cup of coffee with a push of a button. illy has teamed up with espresso machines manufactures like Francis Francis and Gaggia to create exclusive machines for their capsules. The result of this coffee power combination? REALLY great at-home coffee experience.

The iperEspresso Espresso Machines:

You have a few options to choose from when it comes to an iperEspresso machine, few of them are made by Francis Francis, an espresso machine company owned by illy itself. The other machine is by Gaggia, another Italian espresso machine manufacturer known for powerful espresso machines either for home consumers or commercial use.

Here are a few of the top-rated iperEspresso machines:

Francis Francis for illy X7.1 iperEspresso Machine:

Francis Francis for illy X7.1 iperEspresso Machine

iperespresso brewing

What makes this machine special is how it combines the looks of a retro machine and the power of a high-tech one. It looks like your regular espresso machine, but that portafilter actually holds iperEspresso capsules exclusively, making  your espresso brewing easy and mess-free! The machine gives you controls of temperature, and it features a steam wand for milk frothing so you can craft the perfect cappuccino or latte.

Illy Caffe Touch Espresso Machine:

Illy Caffe Touch Espresso Machine

Illy Caffe Touch Espresso Machine

This one looks like it came from the future, very unusual design, clean and sleek lines, perfect for a minimalist. This one-touch system works just like it sounds, with one touch! Place your capsule, and you cup under the dispenser and push the button. On the downside, it doesn’t have a built-in milk frother, so if you’re looking to make milk based coffee drinks, you’ll have to get one separately.

Gaggia for Illy Espresso Machine:

Gaggia for Illy Espresso Machine

If you prefer a compact machine that does it all, you’ll love the Gaggia for illy! It has a classic look, simple to use one-touch system and a built-in milk frother. It doesn’t take much counter-space, so it’s perfect for home or office use.

The iperEspresso Capsule Variety:

iperEpresso capsules are available in four main roasts: dark, medium, lungo and decaf. They’re also available in three different blends; Brazil, Guatemala and Ethiopia. One of the down sides to iperEspresso capsules is that, compared to Nespresso, their variety is still very small in size, so you don’t have a lot of options if you prefer flavored coffee, for example. But if you like your coffee plain and pure coffee goodness sourced from around the world, illy is definitely for you. You can click here to see the coffee capsules and read customer reviews about them.

How Is iperEspresso Different Than Nespresso and Which is Best?

  • If we’re to compare iperEspresso and Nespresso, the only difference would be in the variety of coffee available. Nespresso has a larger range, indeed. But that’s not a deal-breaker for everyone, so as long as you know which coffee you prefer to drink, you’ll know if this would break the deal for you or not.
  • iperEspresso’s machines are considerably nicer than Nespresso machines in how they look and work. For example, it’s nice that the Francis Francis X7.1 allows you to control temperature – no Nespresso machine allows that. The classic espresso machine look with the built-in milk frother is nice, too.
  • An important thing to keep in mind is the price for the capsules. At this point, Nespresso would win as more cost effective as iperEspresso capsules are slightly more expensive (21 capsules per can at $18).
  • Another capsule-related point to consider; iperEspressos are exclusive to their machines, and they’re not refillable. Although Nespresso capsules are not refillable as well, there’s a few non-official refillable capsules (though poorly rated), and a few alternative capsules available.

illy’s e.s.e pods vs. iperEspresso pods, What Is The Difference?

illy’s (or any brand’s) e.s.e pods is a pre-measured espresso pod that you can use with any traditional espresso machine. iperEspresso coffee capsules can be used with a few compatible espresso machines (see above). With the capsules, there is no cleanup required, they’re pre-measured for both espresso and lungo (different capsule for each drink) and you’re getting the perfect drink every time. Are iperEspresso Capsules Recyclable?

Yes, luckily, they are! You can learn more about their recycling program here.
